I have been tutoring for nearly four years, and have experience in the subjects of English (from 5th-12th grade) and math (elementary through algebra). Additionally, I have two years of experience teaching English at the high school level, an opportunity I was allowed through the "Teach for America" program. These experiences have been invaluable to my growth as a tutor, and I am well-equipped and confident in my abilities. While I enjoy tutoring many subjects, I am most excited about English. I am an avid reader, and my love for reading spills over into the writing process as well. Many people struggle with critical reading skills and the process of writing, and I find great joy in helping students overcome these barriers and gain the confidence that comes with completing a task or assignment.One of the important things I learned while teaching was the importance of identifying each student's reading level and learning style. That is my first goal, and as I get to know the individual I then adapt as needed. I next focus on asking leading questions and helping the student learn how to think critically and find answers independently. I attended the University of Kansas and received degrees in Journalism and International Studies, graduating with a 3.9 GPA. When I'm not tutoring, some of my interests include fly-fishing, running, watching football, and going to the theater.
